The Smith Optics Garden State Grudge
Match Qualifier went down in declining conditions on the 13th Ave. beach in
Seaside Park early Friday. The distant Tropical Storm Franklin provided
some decent bump early on, but as the tide filled in the waves were few and far
between. Randy Townsend was the lone competitor that actually listened to
organizer Rob Cloupe over the PA as he called the waves on the northern
border of the competition area. That call paid off as Townsend caught long
rights and lefts and took home the win, $300 and a chance to compete in October
in the GSGM final. Jason Mitchell, Drew McCoy and Al Poloini followed with
the top three earning spots in the fall.
